So what exactly is the Watts Linkage on the RX-7 and why should you upgrade the bushings? A Watt’s linkage assembly is incorporated in the rear suspension and axle of the RX-7 to prevent sideways motion between the axle and body of the car. Watt’s linkage approximates a vertical straight line motion, and does so while locating the center of the axle. The linkage assembly consists of two horizontal rods of equal length mounted at each side of the RX-7 chassis. In between these two rods, a short vertical bar is connected to the horizontal rods. The center of this short vertical rod – the point which is constrained in a straight line motion – is mounted to the center of the axle. All pivoting points are free to rotate in a vertical plane. Over time the stock rubber bushings in the joints of the Watts linkage have likely deteriorated to the point were excess movement in the assembly is allowing undesired lateral movement of the axle assembly.
